Breaking News: the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament just voted 30 minutes ago in favor of the including the following in the EP Report on European Neighbourhood Policy: 1) deplores the lack of respect of international standards for the presidential elections; 2) calls for immediate and unconditional release of opposition politicians, journalists and human rights activists imprisoned for their political activities, including Ilgar Mammadov and Tofig Yaqublu; 3) stresses that any agreement on strategic modernization partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan is conditional on the release of political prisoners and a end to the harrassment to journalists and human rights defenders and activists.

The Committee also voted for the implementation of the UN resolutions on Nagrno-Karabakh conflict.

The abovementioned ammendments have been sponsored by the following members of the European Parliament: Marek Siwiec, Libor Roucek, Knut Fleckenstein (all social-democrats), Graham Watson, Gerben-Jan Gebrandy (both liberals).
