First Lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva has been appointed first vice-president by a decree of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, reports
trend.az.
The offices of first vice-president and secondary vice-presidents were recently created by a constitutional referendum held in the country in September of 2016.
In the event of the early resignation or death of the president before a new head of state is able to be elected, authority will pass not to the Prime Minister – as was dictated by former legislation – but to the first vice-president.
In addition to her new title, Azerbaijan’s First Lady is also:
- a member of the National Parliament (Majlis)
- the president of the Heydar Aliyev and the Azerbaijani Culture Friends Foundation
- the goodwill ambassador of Azerbaijan to UNESCO
- the president of the Azerbaijani Gymnastics Federation
- a member of the National Olympic Committee and of the Political Council of “New Azerbaijan” (Yeni Azerbaycan) Party.
