UK Ambassador to Azerbaijan Irfan Siddig met with the leaders of Republican Alternative and Umid.

On August 17, UK Ambassador to Azerbaijan Irfan Siddig met with the leaders of Republican Alternative and Umid,

Siddig met with Natig Jafarli, the Executive Secretary of public movement Real Alternative (ReAl), and its board members Altai Geyushev and Erkin Gadirli. During the two-hour meeting, they spoke about the upcoming parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan and the issue of political prisoners in Azerbaijan, including theimprisoned leader of ReAl, Ilgar Mamedov.

Last week, Siddig held similar meetings with the leaders of two Azerbaijani opposition parties: Musavat and Popular Front.

Irfan Siddig was appointed the UK Ambassador to Azerbaijan in August 2013. Back in June this year, Siddig criticized the Azerbaijani government’s decision to ban British journalists from covering the European Games. He said that denying entry to British journalists to cover the European Games was “a shame” and had a regrettable impact for Azerbaijan.”
