Six Azerbaijanis convicted of involvement in Syrian conflict

The Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced four Azerbaijanis to 15 years in prison, and two to 14 for fighting alongside Al-Nusra Front in Syria.

The Baku Court of Grave Crimes on July 7, 2015 announced a verdict against six Azerbaijanis accused of fighting in the Syrian war,

The court sentenced Sanan Bahyshov, Ruslan Jafarov, Ahmad Hasanov, and Maarifa Mardanov to 15 years in prison, while Eldost Guliyev and Mamedshah Mammadaliyev were sentenced to 14 years in prison.

They were found guilty under article 228.1 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan (illegal purchase, keeping and carrying of arms and ammunition), article 12.1, 279.1 (participation in illegal armed formations abroad) and article 28, 214.2 (preparation to terrorism).

According to the investigation, in 2012-2014, the convicts were part of Syrian armed groups that belonged to Al-Nusra Front designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations. As

reports, the defendants refused to testify during the trial saying that they did not recognize the legitimacy of the secular court.

, on July 1, 2015, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced nine people to prison terms of up to 15 years on charges of joining ISIS in Syria. The convicts were arrested in September 2014 by Azerbaijani authorities.
