The assistant to the chairman of the Azerbaijani Popular Front Party (APFP) and the director of Azadliq (Az. freedom) newspaper, Faiq Amirli, underwent a medical examination at the medical unit of Baku Detention Center No. 1 today.
According to his lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev, the doctors confirmed that he has serious problems with his liver and gall bladder.
The fact was confirmed to Meydan TV by the wife of Faiq Amirli – Lala Amirli. According to her, Faiq Amirli has long been ill with a chronic stomach disease and his condition worsens every day. She says he needs urgent medical treatment and expressed strong concern over her husband’s condition.
“Faiq became very ill, he lost a lot of weight recently. Faiq needs to follow a special diet, but in the conditions of the detention center it is impossible to provide such food daily”.
The defense attorney of Faiq Amirli has also repeatedly stated that Amirli’s health is deteriorating. According to his lawyer Mehdiyev, even if Amirli is transferred to a prison hospital, it will not help him.
“He will not be able to get the food he needs every day in the hospital.” We will ask international organizations to help resolve the issue changing the measure of restraint in respect of Amirli”.
Faiq Amirli was arrested on August 20 last year. He was charged with inciting religious hatred and infringing on the rights of citizens under the pretext of performing religious rites. In particular, he is a figurant of a criminal case instituted in the country against alleged supporters of the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen.
The international organization for the protection of journalists “Reporters without Borders” condemned the arrest of Faiq Amirli and called for the removal of accusations against him, describing them as “untenable”.
