In Brussels on August 31st, a hearing on the situation of human rights and corruption in the ‘Third World’ will be held. Coordinator for ‘Sport for Human Rights Coalition’, Rebeca Vincent, will be present at the hearing.
Vincent says that “the European Union must urge the government of Azerbaijan to respect its obligations to human rights.”
Representatives of the European Commission and the European External Action Service will also be present at the hearing.
Other activists in the ‘Sport for Human Rights Coalition’ believe that even though many political and societal activists have been released in between March and May of this month, the situation has not seriously changed. Recently, a new wave of arrests has started in the run up to the September 26th constitutional referendum which proposes to raise the presidential term limit from 5 to 7 years, amongst other serious changes that would inhibit the growth and development of democracy in Azerbaijan.
