Turkish President Erdogan visits Shusha, signs declaration
Aliyev and Erdogan signed the Shusha Declaration during the visit.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Azerbaijan on Tuesday and travelled with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliveyev to Shusha, a city which has a significant value after been recaptured by Azerbaijani forces during the recent Nagorno-Karabakh war.
At a joint press conference with President Ilham Aliyev, Erdogan announced that they had signed the "Shusha Declaration".
The document notes that Turkey and Azerbaijan will demonstrate solidarity and mutual support on international and regional issues of mutual interest in terms of political, military and security relations. The declaration also focuses on strengthened bonds between the two countries on an economic level.
There are also topical issues such as further development of transit-transport potential such as the opening of the Zangazur corridor connecting Azerbaijan and Turkey, the restoration of transport and communication links in the region, and the promotion of international transport corridors.
The declaration also mentions that the two countries will support each other in case of threats from other states and that joint meetings will frequently be held on security issues.
Erdogan also stated that Turkey will open a consulate general in Shusha.
Turkish arms support played a supportive role in Azerbaijan's success against the Armenian military during the 2020 war.
