On January 26 participants of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) winter session adopted a Bosnian MP Melitz Markovic resolution called “Intentional deprivation of water for residents of the frontline areas of Azerbaijan.”

According to Turan News Agency, the resolution was adopted by majority of votes (98 for and 71 against).

The resolution calls on the Armenian government to stop using water resources “as a political tool.” Due to lack of regular technical maintenance of the dam on the Sarsang reservoir for more than 20 years the situation in Sarsang reservoir is dangerous for the entire border region, according to the report released by the MP.

The Sarsang dam is in a very poor condition, it is creating humanitarian and environmental problems, and can lead to a large-scale catastrophe, says the report, according to the Council of Europe website. To solve the Sarsang dam problem, the PACE called for an immediate withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the surrounding area, which would enable engineers and hydrologists access the site to carry out a detailed study of the reservoir conditions. International monitoring of the water reservoir is being suggested as well.

During the discussion, the Armenian delegation proposed 20 amendments to the resolution, including a proposal to change the title of the report, but most of the amendments were denied.
