The recent events surrounding Aziz Orujov, the founder and editor-in-chief of Kanal 13 internet television, have raised discussions about media freedom in Azerbaijan.

Orujov’s arrest prompted the Ministry of Internal Affairs to request the blocking of the media outlet he led, citing alleged violations of media laws and the dissemination of discrediting materials about officials.

This led to a legal process, with the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport presenting its case in the Sabail District Court to block Kanal 13. Notably, the trial proceeded without the presence or representation of Orujov or any member of the media organization. The court upheld the claim, resulting in the blocking of the outlet.

Bahruz Bayramov, Orujov’s lawyer, expressed surprise at the lack of prior information regarding the ministry’s claim and subsequent court proceedings. He emphasized the importance of the affected party’s participation in such cases and announced plans to appeal the decision.

Initially detained over allegations of unauthorized construction, Orujov faced additional charges of smuggling, complicating his legal situation. Orujov and his lawyer contested these charges, pointing out similar unauthorized constructions in the area and questioning the circumstances surrounding Orujov’s case. They highlighted concerns about the perceived link between Orujov’s arrest and the critical journalism practiced by “Kanal 13.”

This incident is part of a broader pattern in Azerbaijan, where several journalists and activists have faced arrests recently. Instances of internet resources critical of the government being blocked have also been reported since certain laws were enacted in 2017.

Despite efforts to address the blocking of media sites in the European Court, the situation remains complex for journalists in Azerbaijan. Orujov’s case serves as an example of the challenges faced by media organizations and individuals striving for journalistic freedom in the country.
