Intigam Aliyev’s Cassation Appeal Postponed

Human rights lawyer and political prisoner Intigam Aliyev’s cassation appeal was postponed till February 24

Human rights lawyer and political prisoner Intigam Aliyev’s cassation appeal was postponed till February 24, his lawyer Javad Javadov said in a Facebook post on January 26, adding that he hopes the court will take all the presented facts into consideration.

“Intigam Aliyev has certain health problems. Even coming here is an additional burden for him. He also asked me to let you all know that he doesn’t have a lot of expectations from the court, and therefore he doesn’t want to participate in it,” Javadov said in an interview with Radio Azadliq (Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty).

Judge Gulzar Rzayeva is chairing the appeal procedure.

Javadov told Radio Azadliq that all of Intigam Aliyev’s court procedures and the investigation of his case were conducted with multiple violations.

“All the evidence presented to the court and investigation by the defense side were denied for no reason. Intigam Aliyev was arrested, tried and is being punished because of his work as a human rights defender. Initgam Aliyev stands behind more than 300 cases that were sent from Azerbaijan to the European Court of Human Rights. And more than 50 of these cases were approved in favor of Azerbaijani citizens whose rights were violated. About 10 of those decisions were made when Intigam Aliyev was already in prison. Inigam Aliyev has been punished for his principled position many times,” Javadov added.

Intigam Aliyev was arrested on august 8, 2014. On april 22, 2015 he was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for allegedly committing multiple financial crimes. His appeal was reviewed at Baku Appeals Court and denied on June 21, 2015.
