First lady of Azerbaijan, president of the Heydar Aliyev fund and parliament deputy, Mehriban Aliyeva, appealed to Parliament with a request to adopt a new act of amnesty on the occasion of Republic Day, the 28th of May.
According to Report, the proposition was announced by First Deputy Chairman of Parliament, Ziyafet Askerov.
This is the First Lady’s fourth appeal to parliament requesting amnesty for prisoners.
Should the bill be passed, 3,500 prisoners will be granted amnesty.
Mehriban Aliyeva’s appeal will be examined at the next plenary sitting of Parliament, which will meet on the 20th of May.
In democratic circles of Azerbaijan, some observers have noted that political prisoners and journalists such as Khadija Ismailova, Seymur Khazi and political leader Ilgar Mammadov may be affected by the bill.
