Bayram Mammadov, a jailed member of NIDA, is having serious health problems according to his lawyer, Elchin Sadigov.
On 19 October, the lawyer met the youth activist at the prison where he is being held. The lawyer says that an inflammation has been discovered in both of his kidneys: “Medication has been prescribed to Bayram. He is trying to get better.” Elchin Sadigov says the prison administration promised to address the problems Mammadov is having:
“Bayram’s mental health is fine and he sends his regards to everyone who has supported him.”
Bayram Mammadov is a member of NIDA Civic Movement. He was detained on 10 May 2016 together with another activist, Giyas Ibrahim. A statement released by the Interior Ministry says that 2,904 grams of heroin were found on Mammadov and another 1.150 grams of heroin were found during a search in his home. The statement alleges that 2.607 grams of heroin were found on Ibrahim and another 1.010 grams of heroin were found during a search in his apartment.
However, the young men rejected the accusations in court. They said they were arrested because they wrote “Happy Slave Day!” on a monument to former President Heydar Aliyev. The court sentenced them to 10 years in prison.
The European Court of Human Rights is considering an appeal filed by the two youth activists.
