Appeal of Imprisoned Azerbaijani Journalist Dismissed

The Baku Court of Appeals examined the appeal of the imprisoned executive director of Internet television “Channel-13” Aziz Orujov on June 29

As reported by Meydan TV, the court dismissed the appeal. Orujov’s lawyer Javad Javadli said that the charges against his client are fictitious, and they are going to apply to the European Court of Human Rights.

A petition was submitted to the Nasimi District Court on June 17 to commute his holding sentence to house arrest. The court did not grant the appeal.

The head of the Baku bureau “Channel-13” Aziz Orujov was sentenced to 30 days administrative arrest by the court of Nasimi district of Baku on May 2. He was sentenced under Article 535.1 (resistance to police) of the Code of Administrative Offenses of Azerbaijan.

On the day of the completion of the administrative arrest on June 1, Orujov was charged with criminal charges in the Investigatory Directorate for Serious Crimes of the Prosecutor General’s Office under Art. 192.2.2 (illegal business) and 308 (service forgery) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

The criminal case is connected with the activities of the Public Association “Media Investigations of the Caucasus”, of which he is the founder and “Channel-13”.

The Nasimi district court sentenced to Orujov to 4 months pre-trial detention.

On the day of arrest Orujov was searched and his computers were confiscated from his apartment and from his Baku-located office.
