“This is a military tribunal,” protestors say about Leyla and Arif Yunus trial

Protestors gathered outside the courtroom of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes where the trial hearing into Leyla and Aris Yunus’ case was held with limited access to the public. One protestor dubbed the trial a “military tribunal.” Protestors railing against the mockery of justice were approached by police officers, who maintained that the courtroom hit capacity and could not accommodate more people. According to multiple accounts, however, government-controlled media received an unimpeded access to the courtroom and were allowed to bring in their cell phones, while independent media and activists were turned back. Only two independent journalists, an activist and a diplomat ended up attending the trial.
