The adviser to the chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP), Mammad Ibrahim, was released from prison after more than three years behind bars.

Ibrahim was arrested on charges of hooliganism in September 2015 and convicted in March 2016 in a trial that human rights activists have called politically motivated.

Originally scheduled for release in September 2018, he was placed in solitary confinement two days before the end of his sentence because prison guards had allegedly found a knife under his pillow.

He was found guilty in January this year and received another prison sentence of five months and 22 days.

On 13 February, the Baku Court of Appeal ordered his release by reducing his term to his served time of four months and 16 days.
