On 23 September, heavy rains in Baku caused flooding in many parts of the city.
According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology, on Sunday Baku
received
21 mm of rain or 122% of the monthly norm in a single day.
In a press release, the city Executive Authority
blamed
the flooding on the construction of new high-rises in the center of the capital, the insufficient capacity of the sewage system, and the delayed reaction of the nationwide water company, Azersu.
In the face of
widespread criticism
, the press release goes on to point out that flooding has also occurred in “leading European countries” in the past.
