Why Do Azerbaijani Officials Seek Medical Treatment Abroad?

Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov was flown to Israel on April 3 after doctors discovered a dangerously low heart rate. At Rambam Medical Center in Israel, he was fitted with a pacemaker to control his heart rate.

Sharifov is not the first high-ranking Azerbaijani official to seek medical treatment outside the country. The Chairman of the Parliament of the autonomous region of Nakhchivan, Vasif Talibov, recently had his wife helicoptered into Turkey to received urgent medical treatment.

Are such operations not available in Azerbaijan? Are they not of good enough quality for the country’s leaders? Meydan TV asked residents of Baku why high-ranking Azerbaijani officials go elsewhere for medical treatment.
