US Deputy from the Secretary of State meets with lawyers and journalists in Baku

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Kara McDonald is visiting Azerbaijan from June 13 to June 15.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Kara McDonald arrived in Azerbaijan on June 13.

During the visit, she plans to meet with representatives of civil society, activists, lawyers, journalists, as well as representatives of political parties.

On June 13, the first meeting took place. McDonald met with Elchin Shikhli, editor of the independent newspaper Ayna-Zerkalo, Ayten Mammadova, an independent journalist, and Mehman Aliyev, director of the Turan News Agency.

Speaking to Meydan TV, Mammadova told that issues related to freedom of speech and expression were discussed during a two-hour conversation with the US official.

A meeting between McDonald and lawyers Zibeyda Sadigov, Elchin Sadigov and Nemat Karimli happened earlier today.

Lawyer Nemat Karimli wrote on his Facebook page that they discussed the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, election legislation and the “Tartar case” with the American representative.
