The Tour de Azerbaijan bike race, which took place on the 8th of May, caused enormous traffic jams in and around the capital.
The largest traffic jams occurred around the airport, where thousands of cars waited from half an hour to an hour through the impasse. Cars were forced to stop no less than 3 times, with 20 – 30 minute waits.
Cyclists rode from the coast of the Absheron peninsula to the capital. The race finished on Azadlik Square, with Markus Eibegger, an Australian cyclist, claiming first place.
As per usual, government authorities failed to warn the population of the impending traffic complications.
