The new repressions against political prisoners in Azerbaijan

Three weeks ago, on 26 December 2018, popular blogger and political prisoner Mehman Huseynov started a hunger strike in protest against new charges that authorities fabricated against him just months before his scheduled release. After serving a two-year prison sentence on accusations of slander, he could now remain behind bars for up to seven more years. Sadly, his case is not the only one. Azerbaijani authorities have been coming up with new last-minute charges against political prisoners in an attempt to keep tight control over some of the government’s most vocal critics, trying to stifle any hope that things could change.
