“The main issue was Meydan TV, Mingachevir was an excuse”
Freelance reporters Izolda Aghayeva, Natiq Javadli and Javid Abdullayev, who work with Meydan TV, were summoned to the Serious Crimes Investigation Department of the General Prosecutor’s office for questioning. The journalists were informed that they would be questioned about their coverage of last month’s events in Mingachevir, even though some of them were not even present in Azerbaijan during the events. On August 20, detainee Bahruz Hajiyev died in police custody in Mingachevir, western Azerbaijan. The death prompted protests over police brutality.
However, the majority of the questions during hours-long interrogations revolved around Meydan TV’s activities. The journalists say that Mingachevir was "a pretext for questioning." Earlier, Meydan TV's freelance journalist Sevinc Vaqifqizi was summoned to the Serious Crimes Investigation Department of the General Prosecutor’s office for questioning.
While you are here …
We have a small favor to ask of you. In an environment where information is under tight government control, Meydan TV works hard to ensure that people have access to quality independent journalism. We shed light on stories you might otherwise not read because we believe that those who cannot speak up deserve to be heard, and those in power need to be held accountable. We invest considerable time, effort and resources to do so, which is why we need your help.
Your support empowers our courageous journalists, many of whom work at great personal risk to freedom and safety. Every contribution to the protection of independent journalism in Azerbaijan matters. Thank you.SUPPORT US
