Azerbaijan’s SOCAR has launched an investigation into the alleged real estate corruption scandal linked to the wife of its Deputy Chief of Main Investment Department Giymet Mehdiyev, APA News Agency reported on January 25, citing its SOCAR sources.
According to the statement, the public will be informed about the results of the investigation. Law-enforcement officials haven’t commented on the matter yet.
Earlier, Haqqin.az reported that Mehdiyev’s wife Konul Mehdiyeva, born in 1974, has acquired 16 luxury resort properties in Bodrum, Turkey, for a total amount of US $20 million.
Meanwhile, according to Turan News Agency, Mehdiyev has denied Haqqin.az’s allegations and said that his wife didn’t purchase 16 luxury villas, but only half of one of those villas. Mehdiyev has also told ANS Press that, according to the documents cited by Haqqin.az, his wife has spent only US $60,000 on half of one of those villas, and not US $20 million. He has also stated that the woman in the picture posted by Haqqin.az wasn’t his wife and threatened to take legal action against the website.
