Russia denies plans to build radar station in Azerbaijan

On October 3, 2015 the Chief of the Army Staff of the Russia’s Military Space Forces – General Anatoly Nestechuk said that Russia would not build new station “Voronezh” in Gabala, Azerbaijan, and didn’t consider it reasonable to build such systems abroad, Turan News Agency reports.

, operated by the Russian defense ministry, reported that Russia was planning to build a new early warning radar station “Voronezh” in Azerbaijan.

However on October 3, 2015 the Chief of  the Army Staff of the Russia’s Military Space Forces – General Anatoly Nestechuk said that Russia would not build new station “Voronezh” in Gabala, Azerbaijan, and didn’t consider it reasonable to build such systems abroad,

“I think that the funds of the national system should be in the territory of the Russian Federation and guaranteed to perform these tasks,”  said Nestechuk radio RSN.

It was the first official comment on the matter. Baku officials have not made any statements regarding the construction of the radar station in Azerbaijan.
