Post-Soviet countries – a risk zone for Azerbaijani political émigrés

In Azerbaijan, civic and opposition activists, as well as independent journalists, have faced persecution for years. After the latest wave of repression in 2014, many were forced to seek asylum in post-Soviet countries, primarily Georgia and Ukraine. For a while those countries seemed more democratic, and it was believed that life there would be safe. But in reality things turned out differently. Officials in those countries started to assist Baku in persecuting critics beyond Azerbaijan’s borders.
