At a Musavat (Equality) party meeting on August 2nd, a working group named, “Respublika” was formed in connection with the constitutional referendum that will take place in September,
reported Turan.
More than 200 representatives from 40 different party districts were present at the meeting, relayed the head of Musavat’s electoral quarters, Gulagha Aslanli.
The group is determined to gather more than 40 thousand signatures of voters to officially register ‘Respublika.’ This will allow the party to lead a campaign against the proposed amendments to the country’s constitution.
According to the head of ‘Musavat’, Arifa Hajili, negotiations are being lead with other parties on cooperation in this matter, including ‘D-18’ and others.
The referendum on proposed amendments to the constitution of Azerbaijan will take place on September 26th. According to the amendments proposed by Ilham Aliyev, the presidential term would be extended to 7 years, and would give the president the right to designate first and second vice – presidents. The amendments would further lower the age limitation for potential presidential candidates from 35 to 25 years of age.
If passed, the referendum in September will mark the third change to independent Azerbaijan’s constitution.
