According to a Facebook post of lawyer Elchin Sadigov, human rights defenders Leyla and Arif Yunus filed an appeal against the decision of the Baku Court of Appeal in their criminal case dated December 9, 2015.
He said that his clients had been prosecuted groundlessly and illegally. “The lawlessness of this decision is reasonably detailed in the appeal. The defence requires the termination of the case with the verdict of acquittal and cancellation of special confiscation,” writes Sadigov.
Leyla and Arif Yunus, were arrested in summer 2014. The initial charge of treason (Article 274) was later separated. The main accusatory articles were large-size fraud (178.3.2), illegal business (192.2.2), and tax evasion (213.2.2).
In August 2015 Leyla Yunus was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison, and her husband was sentenced to 7 years with confiscation of property.
Baku Court of Appeal changed the punishment of Arif Yunus to “conditional” with five years of probation. On November 12, 2015, he was released on bail.
December 9, 2015 Leyla Yunus, the court also changed the measure of restraint for Leyla Yunus. She was released with a suspended sentence with five years’ probation.
