Azerbaijani authorities have given temporary permission to rights – defender, Intiqam Aliyev, to leave the country in order to participate in a conference in Strasbourg. Limitations on his movement outside the country are a part of his suspended sentence. However, on the 2nd of June, Sumqait Municipal Court gave him permission to leave the country for 10 days. On Sunday he departed, where he will participate at a conference pertaining to development problems of civil society in countries of the Council of Europe from the 6th – 7th of June.
Participants at the conference will discuss problems encountered by NGOs in countries of the Council of Europe related to independent financing and limitations in their sphere of work.
Intiqam Aliyev was arrested in August of 2014 on charges of economic crimes and was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. The international community was outraged by his arrest. On the 28th of March, the Plenum of the Supreme Court commuted Aliyev’s sentence to a suspended sentence.
