The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) will examine the complaint of former Minister of Health Ali Insanov, his lawyer Toghrul Babayev announced.
Ali Insanov was arrested in October of 2005 on charges of planning a government coup. He was then condemned to 11 years in prison for the alleged embezzlement of state property on a massive scale. According to allegations, he transferred possession of 3 hospitals, 4 clinics, 1 drug dispenser and other government institutions to his son.
Despite the fact that the ECHR has denounced the verdict, he has remained in prison ever since.
In October of 2016, several days before the end of his prison term, he was arrested while still in prison on new charges of drug possession, resisting prison guards and the possession of a prohibited object while in jail.
Ali Insanov himself considers the accusations against him fabricated.
Insanov was one of the founding members of the now-ruling New Azerbaijan Party.
