Ilham Aliyev’s uncle dies at 88

Jalal Aliyev, President Ilham Aliyev’s uncle and brother of the late President Heydar Aliyev, died on January 31 at the age of 88. According to contact.az, the pro-government media in Azerbaijan were slow to report on Aliyev’s passing due the government’s “tepid attitude” toward the President’s uncle.

The National Academy of Sciences stated that a remembrance ceremony would be held today at 2pm. The funeral will take place at the Alley of Honor.

Jalal Aliyev was a biologist and an active member of the National Academy of Sciences. He served as a deputy and member of the Yeni Azerbaijan party.
