A criminal case has been opened against the father of Qiyas Ibrahimov, a youth activist currently in prison on trumped up drug charges.
Hasan Ibrahimov, Qiyas’ father, has been accused of contempt of court.
On June 5 in Baku’s Court of Appeals, Qiyas Ibrahimov demonstrated to the judge with his hands that he was unable to hear the words of the prosecutor. When the judge ignored him, Qiyas ripped out the microphone installed in his glass holding cell.
Court overseers entered the cell and placed Ibrahimov in handcuffs.
His father then expressed his dissatisfaction with court proceedings, and told the judge, “there will come a day when these handcuffs will be latched onto the hands of your sons”.
Hasan Ibrahimov then reminded judges that Judge Enver Seidov, who had earlier condemned Qiyas Ibrahimov to ten years imprisonment, had shortly afterwards suffered a stroke. He stated the possibility of the same happening with the judges present.
Hasan Ibrahimov was then removed from the court room.
Hasan Ibrahimov believes these statements were the cause for the charges brought against him.
“At the investigative department they questioned me, asserting that I had somehow insulted the judges”.
Qiyas Ibrahimov’s lawyer Elchin Sadiqov says that if convicted, Hasan Ibrahimov may face a fine, correctional labor or imprisonment of up to six months.
NIDA Movement members Qiyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov were arrested back in May of 2016 after writing “Happy Slave Day!” on a monument to former Azerbaijani president, Heydar Aliyev.
They were charged with drug possession and distribution and both sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
