reported.
Farhadoglu was attacked by a security officer while he was covering a student protest at Baku State University in February 2014. As a result of the attack, the journalist suffered serious injuries that led to partial disability. About 500 students protested against the new testing system, which would require students to pay higher tuition fees.
The journalist’s colleagues filmed the assault on camera. Despite video evidence, the prosecutor’s office of Yasamal district refused to initiate a criminal case into this matter. The journalist appealed the decision, but his appeal was also rejected.
According to the journalist’s lawyer, Samir Agayev, the complaint deals with violations of the rights of journalists guaranteed under Articles 3 (prohibition of torture and inhumane treatment); 6 (right to a fair trial) and 10 (freedom of expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights.
