Earlier, it was reported that Ilham Aliyev had signed an agreement with Turkey to allow the Turkish Air Forces to use an air base in the military city of ‘Qizil Sherq.’

The Turkish Air Forces would have had access to an air terminal in the village of Zeynalabdin Taqiyev.

The alleged agreement between Turkey and Azerbaijan was reached on the 3rd of June, 2016 in Baku.

However, according to

Ria Novosti

, the Deputy Minister of Defense of Azerbaijan, Ramiz Tahirov, announced on the 21st of July that such rumors were unfounded. According to him, the air base has been in use by the Turkish Air Forces since the 1990s, and has been used to transport Azerbaijani military personnel to missions in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Turkish Air Forces will not be allowed use of the site as a base for air force operations.

The protocol that was signed by Aliyev on the 20th of July gave permission to the Turkish Air Forces to repair the base. Its purpose will not change.
