Gezal Bayramli, deputy chairwoman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was detained on May 25 while returning from Georgia to Azerbaijan.
Leader of the Popular Front Party Ali Kerimli wrote in a Facebook status, “something was put in the bag of Bayramli” and detained. She managed to inform Kerimli about the event by phone.
News of her arrest became known in the morning of May 26. It is expected that she will be transferred to Baku.
Ogtay Gulaliyev, a human rights activist, writes that 10 thousand dollars worth of counterfeit bills were allegedly found in Bayramli’s bag.
“Now she is being interrogated by the employees of the State Border Service and the Main Directorate for Combating Smuggling and Customs Violations. Unfortunately, it is not possible to clarify this information. ”
The Azerbaijani border service has not yet commented on this issue.
