The European Court of Human Rights has begun looking into the case of the death of Elshad Babayev.
Plaintiffs allege that the case of his death was not thoroughly investigated when he died in Detention Facility No. 14 in December 22, 2014, allegedly from torture.
The case is being brought against the Azerbaijani government for having violated Articles 2 (right to life), 3 (right to not be subjected to torture) and 13 (right to an effective investigation).
Simuzar Babayeva, the sister of Elshad Babayev, has released a photo of her brother in which numerous bruises on his body and a scar on his head are visible. She said that the photos of her brother’s body were taken by herself in the building of the forensic medical examination. She also said that the Azerbaijani court had ruled that her brother had died from a heart attack.
She said that she will continue her fight against her brother’s murderer.
“They killed my brother. It is undeniable. It can be seen from the photos that my brother faced very severe torture. Claiming a heart attack as the cause of death is an attempt to cover up the crime. But I will continue my fight in order to have justice served and to make sure the guilty receive their punishment”.
