The village of Mardakan is about 25 km from Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku. One of the many “Baku Villages” — a term used to describe a series of settlements surrounding the Azerbaijani capital — the name translates to “Brave Place” and is rich with historical monuments.
A square – shaped castle in the village has been preserved from the 13th – 14th centuries. However, a 22 – meter – tower which is made up of 6 rooms is in desperate need of repairs. It was made with shell, limestone, goat and camel wool, eggs and dirt. You can see some of Baku’s neighborhoods from the highest floor of the tower, like Ramana, Bilgah, Nardaran, Buzovna, Gala, Pirallahi, Shuvelan, Shagan and others.
Holes dot the premises of the tower, which were used to preserve food and other products.
Tourists come to visit Mardakan Castle more in the spring and summer seasons. Around the castle, various historical tablets and statues can be found. Various historical monuments could be found even in the yards of the local residents if they were to be excavated. If the residents find them, they voluntarily leave them in the courtyard of the castle.
