Azerbaijani women’s groups protest US recognition of Jerusalem as Israeli capital

On 11 December, a group of about 20 women

held a protest

outside the US embassy in Baku against the US president’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The protest was organized by the women’s council of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan, and the Non-Governmental Alliance of Soldiers’ Mothers.

The protesters held signs with slogans saying “Stop terrorism” and “Karabakh and Quds (Jerusalem) are Muslim lands”. They condemned Trump’s move and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine.

On 12 December, the Board of Muslims of the Caucasus

issued a statement

regarding Jerusalem. The statement notes that Jerusalem is a place of great significance for Muslims. “We are worried about what is happening in the world currently. It is a dangerous trend that international law does not work and the opinion of the international community is not considered. We unequivocally state that the unilateral decision to declare Jerusalem as a capital is unacceptable. This may lead to violations of the rights of not only Muslims but non-Muslims as well,” the statement reads.

On 6 December, US President Donald Trump

announced

his decision to officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“Israel is a sovereign nation with the right, like every other sovereign nation, to determine its own capital,” said the president. “Acknowledging this is a fact is a necessary condition for achieving peace.”
