Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with his Armenian counterpart Zohrab Mnatsakanian in Moscow to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The meeting was hosted on April 15 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and was devoted to what Russia’s Foreign Ministry called “issues concerning the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement," RFE/RL reported.
It is reported Mnatsakanian had a one-on-one meeting with Lavrov in Moscow earlier in the day before they met with Mammadyarov.
The ministers’ meeting comes two weeks after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met in Vienna on March 29.
The meeting, which was also attended by Mammadyarov and Mnatsakanian, was held in what the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs and the leaders of the both sides later called in a joint statement “a positive and constructive atmosphere."
For over two decades, Baku and Yerevan have been at heads over the region Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict flared up the late 1980s when the Armenian population of the territory decided to separate from Azerbaijan, a move that ended in a full-fledged war that killed some 30,000 and left many more displaced. The conflict is still ongoing.
