The Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan has called for the arrest of European Parliament Members Frank Engel (Luxembourg), Eleni Theocharous (Republic of Cyprus) and Jaromir Stetina (Czech Republic) for their participation in the recently-held unrecognized referendum in separatist Nagorno- Karabakh.

Press Secretary for the Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Eldar Sultanov announced this information to APA yesterday.

They have been charged with illegally visiting the occupied territories of Azerbaijan on several occasions, in addition to their illegal participation in the so-called referendum as observers.

The recent referendum in Nagorno-Karabakh transferred the country to a fully presidential system of government and renamed it the “Republic of Artsakh” – the Armenian name for the disputed territory.

The Press Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Hikmet Gajiyev said that those who visited Karabakh to participate in the referendum as monitors have been included on Azerbaijan’s list of personae non gratae.

Frank Engel is the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia to Luxembourg.
