On April 3, the Yasamal District Court in Baku reviewed the request from the investigative body to extend the detention of Azar Gasimli, the head of the Institute of Political Management and independent politician.

The request from the investigative body was presented during the court hearing, chaired by Judge Orkhan Mammadli.

The court ruled to extend Azar Gasimli’s pre-trial detention by 2 months.

Gasimli was detained on December 8, 2024, on suspicion of demanding money by threat or force. The following day, charges were brought against him, and the court ordered his detention for a period of four months.

Azar Gasimli denies the charges and links his criminal prosecution to his socio-political activities, considering the case fabricated for political reasons. On December 9, his lawyers requested the prosecution to provide initial evidence of his guilt, but none was presented.

Several days before his arrest, Azar Gasimli was banned from leaving the country. He was also interrogated at the Baku City Police Department as part of the investigation into Imran Aliyev, the imprisoned head of the Meclis.info website.
