On July 17, during a hearing of NIDA activists at the Baku Court of Appeal one of the guards attempted to throw in a tear gas canister into the court room. It seems like the guards were very frustrated that day or on edge, otherwise, how does one explain a guard hitting a lawyer’s arm as the latter was passing a letter to his defendant Zaur Gurbanli?
A few questions come to mind- do all courts in Baku carry tear gas canisters for just-in-case-court hearings? Or was this the only guard in the whole of Baku who got hold of the canister and hoped to create chaos? And why of course? Why would you walk inside the court room with a tear gas canister? And why hit the lawyer’s arm in the first place?
According to
MeydanTV Azerbaijan’s service
[AZ], only once the prosecutors and the other guards got involved, that the guard in question was taken out of the court room.
