Activist Assaulted at the Main Drug Enforcement Department

Omar Mammadov said that staff member of Drug Enforcement Department punched him in the rib cage eight times to get a confession.

On May 13 the hearing on the case of the 19-year-old Facebook activist Omar Mammadov charged with illegal drugs trade continued at the Baku Court of Grave Crimes chaired by judge Eldar Mikailov.

The defense lawyer, Alaif Hasanov, shared with “Turan” NA that after the indictment was announced, two officers from the Ministry of Interior’s Main Drug Enforcement Department, Aqil Aliyev and Khayal Nasibov, and two case witnesses, Elnur Maharramov and Jeyhun Aliyev, testified at the hearing.

According to police officers, Mr. Mammadov was arrested due to the information on his illegal drugs possession. However, the investigation did not identify the source of the drugs. Mr. Mammadov said that staff member of Drug Enforcement Department named Alakbarov, punched him in the rib cage eight times in order to get a confession.

During the witness testimony, the defense lawyers asked Mr. Maharramov whether or not he has been a case witness for other similar cases, his answer was negative. The lawyers then presented to the judge reports confirming Mr. Maharramov’s involvement as a case witness in other cases held in Baku Court of Grave Crimes, Nasimi and Narimanov district courts.

However, the judge refused to include the evidence to the case, which Mr. Hasanov considered to be an unprecedented violation of law. Mr. Mammadov stated that there were no case witnesses during his arrest, that he only met Mr. Maharramov and Mr. Aliyev at the Drugs Enforcement Department where they signed unknown documents. That was when Mr. Maharramov asked Mr. Mammadov: “Why are you involved in politics? Everything is great in the country!”

The trial will resume at 11 a.m. on May 22.
