The week of 12-16 July saw Tofig Yagublu's sentence modified, animal rights activists in Baku detained and fined, and the arrest of the European Movement Azerbaijan Chair Ramin Hajili.


Tofig Yagublu's sentence has been modified to probation

National Council and the Musavat Party activist Tofig Yagublu, who had been sentenced to 4 years and 3 months in prison, has had his sentenced suspended. The decision was made on 15 July at the Baku Court of Appeal, chaired by Judge Elmar Rahimov.

Tofig Yagublu to 4 years and 3 months in prison on charges of hooliganism. Yagublu went on hunger strike in protest and as condition worsened, he was transferred from the pre-trial detention center to a clinic. On 18 September 2020, he was released on house arrest. His case was one of the most significant stories in Azerbaijan in 2020 until war with neighboring Armenia broke out just nine days afterwards.

Animal rights activists detained at protest in Baku fined

A group of animal activists held a

rally

in front of the "Toplan" Center for the Care of Stray Dogs under the slogan "End the Baku massacre."

They accused the center, which has many dogs under its protection, of non-transparent activities. The demonstrators demanded to be let in to view the conditions the stray dogs are living in.

They were detained by police and then fined 400 AZN for protesting.


European Movement Azerbaijan Chair Ramin Hajili arrested

The Azerbaijan European Movement Chair Ramin Hajili was

arrested

at the beginning of this week. This was reported to Meydan TV by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.

"Ramin Hajili is involved in a criminal case under investigation at the Prosecutor General's Office. He was remanded in custody by a court decision", the prosecutor's office said.

According to another source, Meydan TV, Ramin Hajili is accused in a criminal case involving emigrants. It is alleged that Ramin Hajili took money from people who wanted emigrate from Azerbaijan and prepared fake documents for them.
